A practical buyer’s guide to evaluating the work, the risk and the people behind the pitch.

Buy the decision, not another dashboard

If ad platforms disagree about conversions, sales distrusts MQL reports or leadership cannot connect activity to pipeline, a prettier dashboard is rarely the starting point. Define the decision you need to make. Campaign budget allocation, broken event tracking and revenue reporting are different assignments.

Tracking, attribution and incrementality are not the same

Tracking establishes which events you capture and their reliability. Attribution assigns credit to recorded touchpoints under a chosen model. Incrementality asks what would have occurred without the marketing activity. A credible partner explains the assumptions and limits of each method rather than presenting modeled credit as proven causal lift.

Three distinct buying scenarios

Long-cycle B2B: reconcile website engagement, CRM opportunities and offline steps without pretending a single click tells the full story. Ecommerce: understand platform reporting differences, returns and revenue reconciliation. Website migration: establish a measurement plan before launch and protect continuity of reporting. Do not brief these as identical jobs.

Five requirements to put in the brief

Ask for 1) event and conversion definitions, 2) the data sources and access model, 3) consent and privacy dependencies for appropriate review, 4) reconciliation between analytics, advertising and CRM, and 5) post-launch monitoring and debugging. Scope and pricing questions

Split discovery, instrumentation, QA and ongoing maintenance. Fixed-scope work suits clearly bounded implementation; ongoing support may be necessary when systems and processes change frequently. Request separate costs for data warehousing, dashboard development and third-party licences. List all integrations and exclusions.

Use a real diagnostic exercise

Ask a candidate: an advertising platform reports substantially more conversions than your CRM records qualified opportunities. Where would you look first? Strong answers examine definitions, reporting windows, duplicate events, consent, form delivery and CRM stage mapping. Ask for an anonymised measurement plan or test checklist.

Red flags and ownership

Avoid promises of perfect attribution, unexplained methodology and exclusive agency control of critical accounts. Your business should retain administrative access, event documentation and practical exports. Agree on training, incident handling and exit arrangements; bring in qualified privacy counsel where appropriate.

Compare proposals on evidence

Score problem understanding, data integrity, technical method, collaboration and price. Treat account ownership and necessary compliance controls as mandatory requirements, not bonus points. Start with the agency RFP template and shortlist partners for the actual measurement challenge.
