AGENCY BUYER / PARTNER GUIDE · Läs på svenska →

A successful domestic SEO programme does not automatically travel well. New markets bring different search habits, competitors, languages and technical requirements. The right international SEO partner helps you decide where to compete, what to localise and how to measure commercial progress — not simply how many pages to translate.

Find an agency for your expansion or explore the agency directory.

When an international specialist makes sense

You may need specialist support if you are entering several markets, consolidating country websites, building multilingual content operations or fixing indexing problems across regional versions. If you only operate in one country, a capable local SEO team may be a better fit.

Start with business readiness. Do you have the offer, pricing, fulfilment and sales capacity to serve each market? Search visibility is useful only when the business can respond to the demand it creates.

What to evaluate

Market-specific research

Ask how the agency validates local terminology, intent and competitors. An English keyword mapped to a German translation is a hypothesis, not a strategy. Look for native-language review and evidence that the agency understands the buying journey in each market.

Technical architecture

The team should be able to discuss country domains versus subdirectories, hreflang, canonical signals, crawling, indexing and internal links. Ask who owns implementation and quality assurance. A technically correct setup still needs genuinely useful local content.

Content and localisation operations

Clarify who writes, edits and approves each market’s content. Which claims, examples, CTAs and product descriptions need adaptation? How will changes be maintained over time? Translation throughput alone is not a meaningful quality metric.

Commercial prioritisation

A credible proposal separates discovery, technical work, localisation, production and ongoing analysis. It should explain which markets and pages are worth tackling first — and what is deliberately out of scope.

Measurement

Look beyond aggregate rankings. Review qualified enquiries, useful landing-page engagement and pipeline by market where reliable data exists. If attribution is imperfect, ask how the agency will communicate uncertainty rather than invent precision.

Which delivery model fits?

Your situationPotential fit
A small number of similar marketsA strong SEO agency with local review capability
Complex multilingual architectureInternational technical SEO specialist
Markets with distinct buying behavioursCentral programme plus local experts
Limited internal resourcesA partner with explicit project and content ownership

Seven questions for the shortlist

  1. Which markets would you prioritise and why?
  2. Who validates local search intent?
  3. How do you prevent overlapping regional pages?
  4. Who owns hreflang, canonical and deployment QA?
  5. What work is done by local specialists?
  6. What will be delivered in the first 90 days?
  7. How will commercial outcomes be reviewed market by market?

Warning signs

Be cautious of guaranteed rankings, identical content plans for every country, vague subcontracting arrangements and reports that combine all markets into one headline number. Ask what happens when the website, product range or local offer changes.

Prepare a brief that agencies can price

Share your target countries, current URLs, CMS, product or service priorities, sales readiness, internal development resources, expected timeline and budget range. State whether you need strategy only, implementation or ongoing execution.
